Walmart Is Quietly Building the Biggest EV Charging Network in America

Walmart is rapidly expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network, positioning itself as a major player in the EV charging infrastructure. As of the latest data, Walmart has over 79 locations with 664 charging ports, with plans to further expand its network across its numerous store locations. The company's extensive real estate and strategic locations are key factors in its ambitious build-out, which aims to make EV charging more accessible and convenient for communities across the country.

While exact numbers and future plans remain undisclosed, Walmart's significant investment in EV charging infrastructure indicates its commitment to playing a pivotal role in the future of electric transportation. The company has been hosting chargers from brands such as Electrify America since 2018, but now it is building its own network — and quickly. As of March last year, every EV station at a Walmart is under the company brand.

Through June this year, Walmart opened about 46 high-speed public charging stations with 380 cords, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. All told, there are now EV chargers at about 326 of Walmart's 4,600 or so U.S. stores, and estimates suggest another 300 stations are under construction.

How Big Is the Walmart Charging Network?

Because Walmart is keeping its charging network build-out rather quiet, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact number of chargers. The company’s website shows 72 chargers across 17 states, with 11 more locations planned. However, according to Paren, a charging consultancy, Walmart has deployed more charging ports than every charging network except Tesla in the second-quarter of this year.

The Benefits of Walmart's EV Charging Network

Walmart's charging plans are spooling up even as EV sales falter in the United States. Demand for electric cars and trucks slumped after federal incentives expired in September, though they have started to recover since the Iran war spiked gas prices. Analysts are split on where the U.S. EV market goes from here, but the installed base is sizable. There are now 7.6 million plug-in vehicles on U.S. roads, according to S&P Global.

The fact that Walmart knows the indirect value of having charging at their facility is all the evidence you need to know that there is a real viable business there. Charging an electric vehicle typically takes a little bit longer than fueling a gas car. That bit of technological lag has been a bug to EV sales, but to retailers such as Walmart, it’s a feature — a perfect window of idle time for someone to pick up a few odds and ends.

The biggest problem for the growth of all-electric cars so far has been that chargers are heavily concentrated in coastal metro areas, Texas, where a lot of tech companies are going, and the industrial Midwest, where many car brands outside the big three are.

The Impact of Walmart's EV Charging Network on the Market

Walmart's entry into the EV charging market is set to have a significant impact on the industry. The company's vast network of stores and strategic locations make it an ideal player to expand the reach of EV charging. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, Walmart's charging network will provide a much-needed boost to the industry.

The expansion of Walmart's EV charging network is also expected to drive growth in the EV market. With more charging options available, consumers will be more likely to consider purchasing an electric vehicle. Additionally, Walmart's charging network will provide a convenient and reliable charging experience for EV owners, which will help to increase adoption rates.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Walmart's rapid expansion of its EV charging network is a significant development in the electric vehicle industry. The company's commitment to making EV charging more accessible and convenient for communities across the country is a major step forward for the industry. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, Walmart's charging network will play a vital role in supporting the adoption of EVs.

With its extensive real estate and strategic locations, Walmart is well-positioned to become a leading player in the EV charging market. The company's investment in EV charging infrastructure is a testament to its commitment to innovation and customer convenience. As the EV market continues to evolve, Walmart's charging network will be an essential part of the ecosystem, providing a reliable and convenient charging experience for EV owners.
