Measuring approximately 2.25 inches by about 4 inches high and a little more than one inch thick. Powered by two AA cells, it can record 60 minutes or - surprise - more of video. In my experiments, I registered almost 2 hours of video on a flip Ultra Video. There is no great secret here: If what you are recording is relatively little traffic, you can stretch your recording time. So, for recording lectures of your version of “My Dinner With Andre”, the Flip can work better than you planned.
The 640 x 480 VGA video is surprisingly good. Not theatrical quality sharpness, but much better than your mobile phone, camera will produce. Action has been registered smoothly with little or no artifacting. Exposure ability is excellent. I tried it on a brightly lit scenes ranging from sunny outdoor street with great contrasts in a dark highway illuminated only by passing cars. Good detail under all circumstances with little block. Very surprising, really.
The unit has what appears to be on a 2x digital zoom, which is I think very nice.
The Flip Ultra Video is a nice piece of design. The battery compartment is hooks on the bottom and is very resistant against accidental opening. There is also a tripod connector on the bottom. It is mounted off-center, which I find unfortunate because the camera would be a perfect fit for the Quik Pod Pro + with all accessories included Tripod Legs, a handheld camera mount that allows you to yourself and a companion or two in your own videos . It’s a really clever gadget, but the off-center tripod mount on the Flip makes it a little difficult to use.
From the back, on the right, is a sliding switch on the power of the unit on and off. Again, the switch is very well designed and very difficult to travel accidentally.
On the back of the Flip is a 1.5 “transflective screen that you see even in very bright daylight. It is more than sufficient for casual videomaking. There is a 4-way rocker switch under the viewfinder. These four is a great way red button in the middle that controls recording. It’s hard on the side to use, where you use a fingernail is pressing to stop and start recording. they made it clear that this way to prevent you by inadvertently starting and stopping, but they did their work well. It is a hassle to some trouble to start and stop recording. But in any case you will not accidental recordings with this unit. Rocker The switch is for multiple purposes. Playback volume is controlled from here is the digital zoom and, in the playback mode, moving from one to another clip. There is a play button on the left side of the 4-way and delete button on the right. Could not be simpler. My only complaint is that the start and stop recording function isn ‘T bit as if he could be.
Response time of the device is excellent. Once you do that annoying start button pressed, the unit starts recording almost immediately. Audio quality, by the way, is excellent. The built-in microphone is sensitive and in the vicinity of votes shall be recorded without distortion.
The Flip is the kind of things can you do with you all the time and whip into action fairly quickly (but thanks to that pesky record mode, not quickly enough) to lay down some cute what the kids are doing or anything that is going on around you . Bloggers, the thriving independent journalists and artists of many types will love Flip. Parents whose children in the “cute moments will also love it. And, frankly, it’s a nice thing to pop in your pocket when you travel. The Flip is one of those rare gadgets that can appeal to many different types of people for different reasons.
Of course, I am personally impressed by Ultra Video Flip. It not only has a very high cool factor, but a very high utility factor too.
